Marshall University School of Medicine is accredited by the the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians.

Goals

Marshall University School of Medicine's goal to improve health care for rural areas in West Virginia and other parts of Appalachia as well as train and educate health care providers in rural West Virginia is reflected in "The Interactive Patient"'s goals.

Many parts of rural West Virginia already have access to the Internet, while in even more areas plans for connections to the 'Information Super Highway" are being implemented.
This simulated interactive patient encounter attempts to educate physicians with access to the Internet, further their clinical skills as well as to provide them with a possibility to obtain continuing medical education without having to leave their town and practice.

Since 'The Interactive Patient' is accessible without charge to anyone with an Internet connection, we believe that this service will be strongly utilized.

Informal surveys of physicians on the Internet in several mailing lists as well as informal surveys of physicians, residents and medical students at Marshall University School of Medicine have indicated a need for truly interactive Continuous Medical Education that is available to the physician at any time from his/her home or office.
